R: Just to make clear, on the picture it's not a hand crossbow, but a light crossbow...

Let's just call it artistic freedom and leave it at that I'm afraid this pic was the closest I found to the character I had in mind

My character is Praklati, the unlucky son of a former merchant.
His father used to be wealthy and respected all through the north of the Sword Coast, at least until he was found guilty of unspeakably horrific human sacrifices. After that, it wasn't long before Prak's mother committed suicide and his father's wealth was taken by the city and various greedy relatives.
With a forever cursed family name, he ended up living in the streets ; but that was only the beginning of his troubles.

To survive, Prak spent most of his teenage years robbing houses in Neverwinter, pickpocketting, and sleeping in squatted houses or in prison.
Frail of stature and rather small, and being a somewhat bad burglar, it was not uncommon for him to take a beating by an angry victim or a stronger thief, but he always endured all of it and couldn't resolve to commit suicide.
The only ray of sunshine in his life comes from music. Prak once stole a lute and found out playing it was appeasing his mind. Even when he wasn't playing it, just thinking about the akward sounds he was able to get out of that instrument made all the beatings all the more bearable.

Full of scars and usually badly bruised, Prak gets some respect from his "friends" for the simple fact that he endures all those things (they suspect him to like the beatings, but he runs away from them more often than not). He also seem to be able to cast a spell or two...

Not necessarily, with my luck, I totally might have ended up in a gulag.

Same problem here. I've run Ravenloft repeatedly as a DM, since the very first module from 1983 in AD&D first edition through several other versions in other editions. I even made a 4E adaptation of the adventure myself just 2 years ago. So I guess I'm far too familiar with the story to be a player.

mister23 should answer but i'm pretty sure a familiarity with the base material will not impede you from enjoying curse of strahd (for that matter i'm pretty familiar with anything Ravenloft really)

You can still play it as long as you make a difference between what you know and what your character know. :-)

I'm going to do that, because I've read the 5th edition Curse of Stardh book quite extensively (I didn't expect somebody to run it at the club).

Well, it already starts with knowing the setting. The Ravenloft setting is pretty much the only one where I would feel comfortable playing a "lawful stupid" paladin.

I must warn you that I have some issues coping with horror so if the GM knows what he's doing I'm not ruling out potential bouts of panic, so don't expect too much bravery out of dear old Bob

R: Yes... sorry about taking sooo long to answer... I was Dming another game today... But playing the old game is a great thing, you know the theme and the pace of the game... And MAYBE it's the same thing... But maybe it's not... But i can tell you, even if it's the exact same game, the combination Dm and players are what make the game itself... I was Dming Lost mines of phandalver for 2 different groups, the outcome are soooo far away one to another... But hey, IF you want to try, agan, I'ld feel extremely honored to have you at the table!

I'd be honored to join your table. Would it be okay if I play a dragonborn paladin, who will *not* be named Dragonbait? If we are starting the game at level 1, I was thinking of letting the course of the adventure influence what oath he will swear at level 3, devotion or vengeance. Not quite "jedi falling to the dark side", but being an option to go a bit in that direction, or have the evil I encounter just strengthen my goodness.

And now with the arrival of Tobold, we have the 6 players needed ... The game is scheduled for May 4, starting at 19:00 until 23:00 ... Any question, please do not hesitate to do before the game. Also remember that the creation must follow the Adventure's league creation guide, to print both the character sheet and the logsheet...

Hint... Perhaps another case of misinterpretation (by being a dragonborn) and a language barrier?

Meet Drachedandion Medrash the 37th, paladin of Bahamut. After years outside of dragonborn society he has nearly become used to most people shortening his name to "Drac". Drac proudly wears the dragonwing helmet of his forefather, Drachedandion Medrash the 1st, although after 37 generations of paladins wearing it the thing is completely out of fashion, and is showing the signs of frequent repairs and part replacements.

Drac's goal in life is to become a hero of the people, following the long family tradition. That is in spite of the fact that he doesn't actually think very highly of people, not if they are peasants or otherwise of low birth. He believes that the gods have created the social classes, and that it is only natural for him to help those who he considers inferior, feeble, and cowardly. Thanks part to his charm, part to his regal bearing and imposing stature, and part to being simply too stupid to understand sarcasm, Drac usually gets the deference he seeks from common people.

His first attempt to become a hero of the people by helping them overthrow an evil tyrant failed miserably. The peasant rebels fled at the first sign of trouble, and the goons of the tyrant easily captured Drac and sent him to the gulag. Well, at least they thought it funny to leave him his tattered dragonwing helmet!

P.S. Before I forget, my DCI number is 2313343200. I got an older card saying "DCI Certified Judge", but that one expired back in 2002.

I am deeply sorry about the awful timing, but I have to cancel my participation.

I went to see a doctor today due to a problem with my shoulder, and it turns out that I need surgery. I'll be operated next week, and then be incapacitated for at least 2 months.

Well, I'm quite tempted to play some kind of wierd paladin/warlock mix. Somewhat similar to the Faceless-man of the Many faced god in game of Thrones.

Starting at Paldin 1 then forward with a nice mix of warlock/paladin.

I've been thinking about Prospero's background a bit I wanted to plague him with horrible luck (he's bound to end up in Ravenloft after all) without making it too much of a sob-story. So he got abducted by a weird monastic order when he was around 8 (Long Death would fit), found his parents again when he came of age and starting to adventure around to further his studies (death & dying as fit for a monk for the order), found his parents again, briefly reconnected before they died of old age (and disease) a couple of weeks later, leaving him with a nice inheritance of ...crippling debt. He fled North, fell in love with a nice lady from noble birth ...and then she died in a freak ice-skating accident. I was unjustly blamed for the death and send to the horrible prison (gulag). Someone tried to shiv me in prison which is probably the reason i got close to the good natured and buff looking types (why hello there, paladin friends).
